Letter to General Raheel Sharif and Pakistan Army
Request: Please withdrawn Rangers from Karachi/Sindh Immediately
Dear Sir,
As a patriotic Pakistani I want to make a humble request. I know that I have not sacrificed for Pakistan as your family has, but in our own small way we have also tried to do our best for Pakistan. Both my parents migrated to Pakistan and after leaving behind all they had. My father served in the army all his life and wanted to give his life for the country but God did not grant his wish. When he was dieing of old age that was his only regret in life; and Pakistan army was his one and only true love.
I was born in a army garrison and consider myself a soldier of Pakistan from the first breath I took and it will be consider it an honor to die as one. I have spent most of life acquiring knowledge and teaching Pakistanis, because I feel that this is the only way to serve Pakistan in the long run. In order to accomplish this I have acquired four masters degrees: MBA, MS in Engineering, Master of Accountancy, and MA in Economics and have done more than 150 credit hours of graduate coursework. Over the last 15 years I have been teaching thousands of students all over Pakistan the latest state of the art technologies so that in due course of time we may emerge as a nation all of us can be proud of. I know this dream will not be fulfilled in my lifetime, but that is not important. I have not married or nor have I saved much, what ever I had I have given to Pakistan. Still it is not even 1% of 1% of what your family has sacraficed for Pakistan. But I think my love for Pakistan gives me the right to make a humble request.
I have little knowledge and experience, but I am certain about one thing that "No one can save anyone from themselves". If a person has decided to commit suicide you cannot save that person no matter how much you may love them.
The people of Sindh have clearly expressed their desire through their legitimate vote that they support PPP and MQM. It is also obvious that both these parties do not want the army/rangers to interfere in their business, whatever it may be. Both these parties had clearly expressed these desires before and during the election process. Even now PPP government is dragging their feet in giving the rangers the required mandate to operate in Sindh. Even then the people have chosen them, therefore there is no other possible interpretation of the election results except that the majority of the people also want what these parties want. Therefore, the Pak army/rangers should respect the wishes of the people and immediately withdraw from Karachi and Sindh.
I know this may lead to many of us being killed in what will follow. I have already assumed that I myself will not survive this episode. However, I think there is no other choice. I myself have no children, but most people who have voted have children, if they still want this for them, who am I or you to tell them otherwise. It is not possible that you and I love their families and children more than them. Therefore this has to be done no matter what the consequences in the short run.
If you do not do this, it may save lives in the short run but will lead to more lives being lost in the long run. It is will lead to 1971 like situation, I need not say more. The other alternative is that rangers stay on and cut back on the intensity of operations and only operate against terrorists who have no political backing, this will lead to even bigger disaster, the total discrediting of the army because the operation will fail. As a result in a few years after your tenure when everything will be on the verge of being lost, the army will have to step in with a bloody coup.
I know this is a very hard decision but sometimes they have to be made. People have to learn to live with the choices they make and we have to learn to respect their decisions.
Pakistan is nothing but Pakistanis, no matter how much we might love them, we cannot save them from themselves. We can only hope that in due course of time they will learn from their mistakes, of course there will be a cost involved in the process, there always is. Let them have what they want.
PS: It is obvious that the government of Punjab and Federal government is not too enthusiastic about the operation as well, therefore it makes sense to withdraw from Punjab as well.
Thank you.
Zia Khan
